Founded in 1995 during a launch conference in the Western Cape, the South African Principals' Association (SAPA) adheres to principles of non-alignment with any political party, organisation or other educational body. This unique approach allows individuals to maintain membership in major teacher unions across South Africa while also being active SAPA members.
While SAPA serves as the national umbrella organisation, its effective operations occur at provincial level. Each province elects its own executive committee, responsible for organising conferences, local seminars, newsletters, and negotiations with provincial education departments on behalf of members.

SAPA Mpumalanga's elected executive runs conferences, workshops and seminars, and represents members before the provincial education department.
The SAPA National Executive Committee convenes once per term, typically in Gauteng, often involving interactions with the National Department of Basic Education. The President and Executive Committee members regularly engage the Department, notably Mr James Ndlebe (Director: Education Management and Governance Development), on issues pertinent to school management.
To prevent any sense of isolation from global educational trends, SAPA offers avenues to stay connected with both national and international developments in educational leadership.
Membership access to the ICP, connecting members with world developments in school leadership.
Membership access to the ACP, keeping SAPA members plugged into continental education trends.
